Following Prof Löfstedt’s review of health and safety legislation in the UK, and in light of the subsequent publication in November 2011 of his report ‘Reclaiming health and safety for all: An independent review of health and safety legislation’, a number of changes were introduced to address some of the concerns that had been identified.
RIDDOR is a set of regulations that requires employers and those who are in control of work premises to report and keep up-to-date records of certain workplace injuries, diseases and dangerous occurrences.
The key changes introduced on 1 October 2013 include: replacing the list of 10 ‘major injuries’ by a shorter list of eight ‘specified injuries’ (the revised list includes, among others, fractures, amputations, crush injuries, burns and loss of consciousness following head injuries); replacing the schedule of categories of industrial disease with eight categories of reportable work-related illness, which include carpal tunnel syndrome, asthma, tendonitis and cancer; and reducing the types of ‘dangerous occurrence’ that are reportable…
