Hogan Lovells’ Johannesburg office has achieved a level-two Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) accreditation — the only major South African law firm to achieve such a high rating.
BEE is a process recognised by the South African government in the Legal Practice Bill in order to address the redistribution of existing wealth where great disparities were created through the policies of apartheid. BEE accreditation is measured from level one to level eight, with level one the highest.
BEE is governed by the Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment Act 2003 (B-BBEE) and is measured according to a scorecard that takes into account, among other factors, ownership; management control; employment equity; skills development; enterprise development; socio-economic development; and preferential procurement.
Hogan Lovells’ Johannesburg office currently employs 12 B-BBEE partners out of a total of 39 (four male, four female); eight B-BBEE out of 11 senior associates (four male, four female); 15 B-BBEE associates out of 25 (six male, nine female) and 13 B-BBEE out of 27 trainees (four male, nine female).
