Eversheds’ Munro comments on India’s new Lokpal anti-corruption agency

Leonie Munro, a senior associate at Eversheds, has commented following the news that India’s upper house of parliament has passed a measure to implement an independent anti-corruption agency, known as a Lokpal.

The Lokpal will have powers to investigate and prosecute corruption by senior government officials.

Munro said: ‘While the Lokpal law could be seen as a sign of a changing political climate in India dedicated to tackling crime, and was welcomed by Anna Hazare, it has been criticised by the leader of the Aam Aadmi as being too weak.

‘It will remain to be seen whether the law was passed as an attempt by India’s leading parties to appease public concern regarding corruption or whether it will indeed lead to prosecutions for corrupt activity.’
