Brick Court Chambers has expanded its clerking team after poaching deputy senior clerk Tony Burgess from rival set Monckton Chambers.
Burgess joined Monckton in 2006 from 2-3 Gray’s Inn before being promoted in 2008. He announced his exit from the set last month and joined Brick Court this week.
Senior clerk Ian Moyler said of Burgess’s arrival at chambers: “We’re naturally very pleased to be joined by Tony. We’ve worked with and against him on many occasions over the years and he complements our excellent existing clerking structure.”
Brick Court and Monckton are seen as a leading competition and EU sets and their members regularly clash in court. In July, Monckton’s Michael Bowsher QC acted for 2 Travel Group, which is now in liquidation, in its £50m damages claim against Cardiff Bus. James Flynn QC and Colin West of Brick Court were instructed for the defendants (6 July 2012).
Meanwhile, Quadrant Chambers has made the addition of former Fountain Court clerk Chris Gittins, who will work alongside senior clerk Gary Ventura and chief executive Tim Gerrard to help drive development of the set.
In October, Quadrant voted in Luke Parsons QC as head of chambers while also agreeing to push forward expansion of chambers. The set is in the midst of a structural overhaul as it looks to broaden its practice base beyond its traditional marine and aviation roots (4 October 2012).
