No5 Chambers’ Hunka acts as prosecuting counsel in £73,000 benefit fraud case

Simon Hunka of No5 Chambers prosecuted in the recent case of Dawn Huckerby, 45, who has been jailed for 12 months after falsely claiming she was a single mother living alone and failing to declare her partner, Steven Daniels, was living with her. She received £73,000 in benefits that she was not entitled to.

Huckerby denied seven counts of benefit fraud, including received income support, jobseeker’s allowance and housing and council tax benefits between November 2005 and October 2011, but a jury at Leicester Crown Court found her guilty.

Daniels, 54, was convicted of one count of benefit fraud and jailed for eight months. He owned their home, as well as three other properties.

Hunka said: ‘It was a fraud from the outset.’
