Eversheds comments on FSA’s ordering of tests on takeaways purporting to contain lamb

David Young, partner and food health and safety expert at Eversheds, has commented on the UK’s FSA ordering tests on takeaway food purporting to contain lamb meat.

Young said: ‘In the wake of the horsemeat scandal, perhaps we are no longer quite so surprised by stories like this. We might say that we can expect to see more initiatives by regulators to ensure that food businesses are fully complying with the law. But as the first prosecutions arising from the events a year ago are getting under way, the real question is where to start, and how extensive is the problem? These were key themes in the interim report from Prof Chris Elliott and with his final report due in the next few weeks, we can expect the issue to be in the headlines again.

‘In the meantime, food businesses should of course be actively checking their product descriptions to ensure that they accurately describe the product they are selling. Ultimately, misleading a consumer about the product is a criminal offence and can lead to a conviction and fines.’
