BLP launches Indonesia alliance

Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP) has formed an alliance with Indonesian firm Mataram Partners as its newly launched Asia Network continues to expand.

Mataram Partners has become the second member of BLP’s Asia Network, which it launched in March this year with a Myanmar firm (13 March 2014).

Mataram is a Jakarta-based firm led by senior partner Andi Zulfikar. Zulfikar was an associate with the Indonesian affiliate of Baker & McKenzie before moving to Singapore in 2000 to join Denton Wilde Spate (now Dentons). He later moved back to Jakarta and founded Mataram in 2006.

Prior to joining BLP’s network, the firm has already had an existing association with South East Asian firm DFDL. The relationship was formed at the end of 2012 and is ongoing.

“Indonesia is a key market for the firm and this relationship will provide the local knowledge that is key for the work we are doing in the country, especially in the mining sector,” said Alistair Duffield, head of BLP Singapore and South East Asia.

The Lawyer first reported BLP’s intention to add an Indonesia member in March 2014 (19 March 2014). Apart from Indonesia, it is understood that BLP is in discussion with firms in other South East Asian jurisdictions about formalising their relationships by joining its newly established Asia network of selected local legal practices, which will continue to operate independently.
