Berwin Leighton Paisner (BLP) is retaining 65 per cent of its qualifying trainees this autumn.

The firm had a cohort of 20 trainees reaching qualification, with 18 applying for newly-qualified (NQ) jobs at BLP. Of those, 16 were offered positions and 13 accepted.

Eleven of those who stayed take up roles in London with the other two joining the Abu Dhabi and the Hong Kong offices.

Three of the London-based trainees will work in the firm’s finance practice, three join real estate and three corporate. The other two go into litigation and tax.

It is the fourth disappointing retention result in a row for BLP, which hasn’t hot the market-average 80 per cent mark since autumn 2014. The firm froze salaries in the summer, blaming Brexit for the decision.

Training Principal Anthony Lennox said: “Qualifying is a huge milestone for lawyers and we’re pleased to welcome the 13 NQs who have joined our firm. The quality of individuals coming through is outstanding and these new lawyers will boost our five main practice teams with two also moving internationally.” The firm announced a Myanmar-based training contract in June, with the first trainees starting in September 2017.
