The Lawyer Awards’ dinner was cut short for one guest, private equity partner Richard Youle of Linklaters, who had to dash off to close a deal even before the petits fours were served. He must have been the swishest person in the meeting room, as he was still wearing his black tie.
“That’s just because he fancies himself as the James Bond of the North,” said a rival partner.
No word yet on whether that makes Kirkland & Ellis corporate partner Graham White Blofeld. And Tulkinghorn wonders who Pussy Galore would be to this 007 of the private equity world.
But Richard Youle wasn’t the only hotshot to hang about in his DJ. Partner of the Year Paul Maher turned up at the awards fresh from a client pitch, to which he had worn his dinner suit. “But it’s okay,” he told Tulkinghorn hurriedly, “I didn’t wear a tie or anything.”
