Lovells has hired its second Italian partner in as many months, boosting its Rome arm with the hire of SJ Berwin competition partner Gianluca Belotti.
As reported on www.thelawyer.com (4 July), Lovells was in talks with Belotti, but the appointment had to go to a partnership vote.
Last month the firm raided E&Y Law’s Italian arm for corporate head Paolo Tannoni.
Belotti was head of the EU and antitrust group at Chiomenti Studio Legale before joining SJ Berwin and spent 10 years working at the European Commission prior to that. His clients include Piaggio, shipbuilder Finacantieri and flight operator AirOne.
Although he will be based in Lovells’ Rome office, Belotti will travel to the Milan and Brussels offices. His hire takes Lovells’ European antitrust practice up to 11 partners.
The appointment comes after McDermott Will & Emery raided Lovells to set up a competition presence in Italy. Associate Veronica Pinotti left to join McDermott as partner and competition team head and was joined by Milan-based Lovells associate Martino Sforza.
