High Court action has been launched over cancellation of proposed appearances of ice dance stars Torvill and Dean at last year's Edinburgh Festival. Phil McIntyre Promotions, (PMP) of Preston, promoter of Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean, is suing Festival Fringe Society, of Edinburgh, for more than £170,000. The writ claims PMP paid £4,500 for a full-page advertisement promoting Torvill and Dean in the 1995 brochure Edinburgh Festival Fringe. However, it claims that when the brochure was printed the advert was missing and as a result the planned performances were cancelled. The writ says the advert was essential to the commercial success of the performances. PMP seeks £141,451 for loss of profits, basing the figure on earlier performances given by Torvill and Dean. It is also seeking expenses amounting to more than £30,000. Given the audiences at the earlier shows on the tour, PMP says it had expected to promote at least 15 performances of the show at Edinburgh between 12 August and 15 September 1995.

National Westminster Home Loans of London EC2 is suing Timothy Bryant, of Willan Management, Teddington, and Andrew Nicholas, of Farnham Common, Slough, trading as Bryant and Partners, for damages for breach of contract and negligence arising out of their valuation of Leighton Hall, Leighton, Welshpool, Powys, in January 1987 and May 1990.

A consultant in child and adolescent psychiatry is suing the South Bedfordshire Health Care NHS Trust for damages after being sacked from her £52,000-a-year job for alleged "personal misconduct". Dr Susan Kramer, of Harpenden, Hertfordshire, has issued a writ against the Trust claiming she was wrongly sacked without notice or pay and that the Trust failed to follow correct disciplinary procedures.

Thetford widow Janet Robb, whose husband David died in a shipping accident at Teignmouth, Devon in March 1994, is suing FT Everard and Sons, of Greenhithe, Kent, for damages. She claims her husband's death was the result of negligence and breach of statutory duty by the company.
