Cobbetts has made six redundancies, four of whom are associates, across its domestic conveyancing and professional support departments.
Of the four associates, three were based in Manchester and one in Leeds. Two national professional support lawyers will also lose their jobs.
The move follows a redundancy consultation that covered all levels and practice areas of the firm’s strategic real estate department, as reported on TheLawyer.com (1 Aug 2008).
Managing partner Michael Shaw (pictured) said that certain areas of real estate were deemed weaker than others.
“It’s not rocket science that those sectors driven by private funding are hardest hit, while the public sector and major projects remain strong,” he added.
Real estate is the most significant of Cobbetts’ departments, accounting for 37 per cent of the firm’s turnover – the equivalent of £21.98m. Following the redundancies the practice group will have 121 fee-earners.
