Weil Gotshal & Manges has been taken on pro bono by Shareholders United, the shareholder group fighting Malcolm Glazer’s attempts to take over Manchester United Football Club, as exclusively revealed by www.thelawyer.com last Friday (5 November).
The two leading partners – Will Rosen and Ian Hamilton – are both Manchester United season ticket holders, although they are keen to stress that this is not a personal crusade. Weil Gotshal does pro bono work for a wide range of clients, including Oxfam.
The Lawyer can also reveal that Fifa’s president Sepp Blatter last week wrote to the chairman of Shareholders United and Crowell & Moring partner Nick Towle to express his solidarity and personal support.
Blatter said: “Fifa has been at the forefront of many an initiative that intends to bring back the world’s favourite game to lost ‘levels of normality’, where sportsmanship controls the outcome of a game, and not the purse of a handful of ‘high net-worth individuals’.
“I sympathise with the philosophy of Shareholders United and can only express my respect for your fighting spirit.”
