The council has been reduced from 12 members to seven as part of managing partner David Childs’ bid to streamline management structures at the magic circle firm.
Senior partner Stuart Popham will automatically take one place on the new body, while two other current members have been nominated for re-election to ensure continuity. These are thought to be New York finance partner Thomas Schulte and Amsterdam M&A partner Jeroen Koster.
Partners will vote separately on whether to re-elect the pair, while also nominating five other names, which could include current members.
Another change will see the requirement for a set number of council members from certain jurisdictions removed. However, no more than two partners from any one country can be elected.
The overhaul of the firm’s governance comes after a review of management structures was rubber-stamped by partners last month. Other changes include the removal of a partner’s right to protest a termination notice and the shortening of the warning period to underperforming partners.
