Iain Milligan QC’s 20 Essex Street has taken on former president of the European Court of Justice, Gil Carlos Rodríguez Iglesias, as an arbitrator.
Rodríguez Iglesias, who is also a professor of international law at the Universidad Complutense in Madrid, will be a member of chambers but only spend part of his time in London.
When asked why, as a high profile former judge, he did not join a Spanish law firm as a consultant, Rodríguez Iglesias said he did not think it was appropriate for former judges to work for law firms.
“I didn’t think I’d want to work for a law firm as I don’t think such work is appropriate for a former judge and president of the ECJ, whereas arbitration is something very appropriate for a former judge” he said.
But Rodríguez Iglesias said he had not thought of going into arbitration until 20 Essex Street presented him with the opportunity.
“I had the suggestion from 20 Essex Street that I would join and thought it was an interesting idea. The chambers is very well known for arbitration and public international law,” he said.
In addition, the set is taking on Michael Pryles, also as an arbitrator. Pryles has a broad range of experience and is one of the three persons nominated by the Australian Government for inclusion on the ICSID panel of arbitrators. He is also included in the panels of most leading arbitration organisations including LCIA, CIETAC, WIPO and many others.
