Mayer Brown looks to Unilever for IP team boost

Mayer Brown Rowe & Maw (MBRM)’s London office has looked in-house for its latest IP hire, taking on Unilever’s head of trademark filing and prosecution.

London head of IP Stephen Gare said Susie Curtis was the first lawyer to join MBRM’s trademark team from the in-house sector.

“Internationally, there is a commitment to grow IP in 2007,” said Gare, “and we can expect to see a push across the firm as a whole.”

Curtis joins the four-lawyer team headed by partner Mary Bagnall as an associate. Her arrival takes the headcount in MBRM’s London IP group, which also includes six IP litigators, to 11.

Although trademark filing and prosecution are mainstream activities in the US and Germany, London has only had a team since the 2002 merger of legacy UK firm Rowe & Maw and US Mayer Brown & Platt.

Prior to Unilever, Curtis was at Bristows, where she set up the firm’s trademark prosecution offering. She moved to specialist boutique Marks & Clerk in 1996.
