Van spam

Strolling along Chancery Lane the other day, Tulkinghorn glanced across at the shiny new refurbished offices of Denton Wilde Sapte (DWS) and was intrigued to spy an equally shiny white van parked outside.

The van was emblazoned with the firm’s logos and slogans and warned ominously: “Caution! Knowledge inside!”

Meanwhile, the van’s rear door had a quotation attributed to David Starr Jordan, who (as readers will know) was not only a leading US academic and peace activist in the latter half of the 19th century, but was also a famous icthyologist (that’s someone who’s an expert on fish, for landlubbers). Jordan’s quote runs: “The world stands aside to let anyone pass who knows where he is going.”

Tulkinghorn is not sure whether the phrase is intended to warn unwary road users that the DWS white van man is a bit of a daredevil behind the wheel, or whether it referred to the van’s contents – possibly the belongings of those 11 partners who upped sticks for DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary.
