Transport for London’s (TfL) head of legal Betty Morgan has quit the government agency.
Morgan, who is high-profile general counsel Fiona Smith’s deputy, led TfL’s legal department for a while last October after Smith took six months’ extended leave. Smith returned to her role earlier this year.
A TfL spokesperson confirmed that Morgan is leaving to pursue interests outside the law. TfL is advertising externally for a successor, who will also take over the respon- sibility for TfL’s secretariat function, including governance and compliance.
The changes follow a period of upheaval for TfL’s legal department after an internal restructure and an overhaul of its legal advisers. As exclusively reported in The Lawyer (2 August 2004), TfL slashed its legal function by nearly 50 per cent and made up to 40 lawyers and staff redundant, appointing Eversheds to handle bulk work in the process.
TfL is responsible for all of the capital’s transport needs, including London Underground, London buses and the Congestion Charge.
