Family lawyers welcome Divorce Day

The UK’s family lawyers are enjoying D Day (Divorce Day) today, as more divorces are expected to be filed today than on any other day of the year.

The post-Christmas divorce boom, said leading family lawyers, comes as spouses begin the new year with a fresh outlook.

“For many years the first week of January has been the busiest time of year,” said Manches family partner James Stewart. “Christmas is a stressful time, and there is often too much alcohol.

“Then there are people who have been considering a divorce who will use Christmas as a time of reflection and January as a time to make hard decisions.”

Charles Russell family partner Grant Howell said couples with children were more likely to wait for the end of the festive season before launching a petition.

Withers family partner Emma Hatley said the firm always experiences a rush in January as a result of family break ups at Christmas.

Withers is acting on behalf of property developer Stuart Crossley in his high-profile divorce from Susan Crossley, who he was married to for 14 months. The case will test the viability of prenuptial agreements.
