Spanish firm Uría Menéndez has launched a public law practice in Portugal with the hire of a six-strong team from Sérvulo & Associados, headed by partner Bernado Ayala.
The team focuses on advising public bodies and private companies on the public law aspects of infrastructure projects.
A rise in infrastructure spending in Portugal has led to increased opportunities for law firms. Uría co-managing partner José María Segovia said: “Portugal is at the centre of several significant infrastructure projects that are closely tied in with public law, such as the new high-speed train and Lisbon Airport.”
The hires mark another step in Uría’s Iberia expansion strategy. In February it merged with Lisbon employment boutique Fraústo da Silva & Associados, while the Sérvulo hires give Uría seven partners and 37 lawyers in Portugal.
