New appeal judge named

• Mr Justice Stanley Burnton has been appointed a Lord Justice of Appeal, replacing Lord Justice Pumfrey, who died last Christmas Eve.

Burnton J, who takes up the new role on 21 April, will continue as the judge in charge of modernisation, IT and estates.

He has also been appointed to the new board of the HM Courts Service, along with Lord Justice Leveson and District Judge Michael Walker.

Burnton J, who took silk in 1982, was one of the judges who rejected Jeffrey Archer’s bid to appeal his conviction.
