Simmons & Simmons has acted on a major instruction for Qatar Telecom (Qtel) for the first time since the firm’s arrival in Doha one year ago.
It advised the public company, which is listed on the UK Stock Exchange, in its successful joint bid for a mobile phone licence in Oman.
Charles Pollock, head of Simmons’ Qatar office, led on the deal, assisted by partner David Salt who joined the firm two months ago from Qatari firm Gebran Majdalany.
Qtel and Danish telecoms company TDC led a consortium, Nawras Telecom, which won the Oman licence, against 28 other bidders.
Simmons advised on most aspects of the deal, including negotiations with Oman’s Telecoms Regulatory Authority and Qtel’s joint venture with TDC. Pollock also secured a $170m (£94.8m) loan from Qatar National Bank.
