SJ Berwin & Co has advised on a revolutionary move aimed at improving the English cricket team.
The introduction of a contracted squad – confirmed by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) last week – represents a major change in the running of the game.
The contracted players will from now on only be able to play for their counties when England give their assent.
The system has been in place in Australia and South Africa for many years.
Nicole Kerr, SJ Berwin’s senior employment partner, handled the details of the contracts.
Jonathan Metliss, a partner in SJ Berwin’s sports business group, says the appointment is a major success for the firm.
“The introduction of central contracts is widely seen as a significant step towards England becoming more competetive in the international cricket arena,” he says.
Tim Lamb, chief executive of the ECB, says: “We are very pleased to work with SJ Berwin. Its expertise is vital in advising on key issues.”
