Baker & McKenzie’s (B&M) former chair and current policy committee chair, Christine Lagarde, is leaving the firm to become the French Minister for Foreign Trade.

The appointment was announced last Friday (3 June), and takes effect immediately.

Paris-based Lagarde has been a partner at B&M since 1987 and has held a number of high-profile roles at the firm. She was managing partner of the Paris office for four years until joining B&M’s executive committee in 1995, and chaired the committee from October 1999 until October last year.

Lagarde, an employment and anti-trust specialist, was awarded France’s highest honour last year when she was presented with the Legion d’Honneur.

The current chair of B&M’s executive, John Conroy, said that Lagarde will be greatly missed and wished her success in her new role.
