Nine newspapers and broadcasters succeeded in defeating an application to the Old Bailey by the City of London Police for possession of video footage, photographs and notes taken during last month's demonstrations in the City, arguing it is not the job of journalists to gather evidence for the police.

Upper class drug users. Dealing Class A drugs and stashing u20,000 worth of drugs and related equipment in your flat normally carries a fairly hefty prison sentence – unless you're from the right background. Old Etonian Quintin Leatham escaped a jail sentence because Judge Jeffrey Rucker decided it would be "harsh and cruel" to imprison him given the state of his health. The judge said he was moved by the "extraordinary story" of HIV-positive heroin addict and hepatitis C sufferer Leatham. However, this decision is unlikely to be a comfort to anyone sitting in jail on a cannabis-related offence, including those who use the drug to alleviate painful medical conditions.
