The launch party for O’Melveny & Myers’international arbitration group was awash with the bar’s glitterati, but perhaps the most famous face of all eluded Sir Anthony Evans QC of Essex Court Chambers.
Cherie Booth QC of Matrix Chambers had left her swathes of adoring fans especially to talk to Sir Anthony. Booth approached the chief justice of the Dubai International Financial Centre with a flourish saying: “Oh, Sir Anthony.”
Unfortunately, he replied: “Have we met?”Apparently they had. At this point the penny dropped and Sir Anthony realised he was talking to Cherie Booth, the fairly well-known wife of… er, someone else quite well-known. The name escapes…
Tulkinghorn has heard that Sir Anthony was quite embarrassed about his faux pas because Cherie, he says, is “a wonderful woman”.
