Long-serving British Nuclear Fuels (BNFL) company secretary and group legal director Alvin Shuttleworth has left the company. General counsel Sue Quint has taken on full responsibility for the legal function.
Shuttleworth, who joined BNFL 22 years ago, has set up a nuclear consultancy and is currently helping law firms Eversheds and Sutherland Asbill & Brennan to set up their nuclear practice groups. He retains his company secretary responsibilities at BNFL.
Shuttleworth said: “It has been a privilege to have been involved with BNFL during a period of growth when it became a world leader in its field and then overseeing a period of immense change.”
During his time at BNFL Shuttleworth was active in high-profile litigation including the Sellafield leukaemia cases and the judicial reviews relating to the Thorp and Sellafield Mox Plant.
In March last year, BNFL announced its intention to sell off its subsidiary businesses, which effectively will wind the company up by the end of next year.
Shuttleworth played a key role in the disposals of the company’s Westinghouse and ABB nuclear businesses.
As BNFL is to be wound up, no one will replace Quint in the general counsel role. Quint joined BNFL in 1982. She has been head of the commercial group since 2000 and UK general counsel and deputy group legal director since 2004.
Prior to joining BNFL, Shuttleworth spent 12 years working in-house at Warrington & Runcorn Development Corporation, having begun his career at Salford City Council.
