DLA Piper brings in ex-SFO boss

<a class=DLA Piper brings in ex-SFO boss” /> DLA Piper has snared former Serious Fraud Office (SFO) director Robert Wardle in a coup that will strengthen the firm’s regulatory capabilities.

Wardle, who relinquished his SFO post on 20 April, will join DLA Piper as a consultant in its regulatory and government affairs group.

DLA Piper Europe, Middle East and Africa regulatory head Neil Gerrard said: “It’s our belief that to be top of the game we shouldn’t have enthusiastic amateurs on regulation matters. We need specialists, not corporate lawyers messing around. It’s important we have ex-regulators on our team.”

During his five-year tenure as SFO chief Wardle successfully prosecuted several high-end fraudsters, including ;directors ;of computer company Ravelle, who were convicted in a £3.3m fraud on creditors.

Wardle, however, came under fire over the BAE Systems probe. The High Court ruled that the SFO unlawfully stopped a corruption investigation into BAE’s arms deals with Saudi Arabia. In one of his last acts as SFO director, Wardle took the decision to appeal the ruling.

Wardle was unavailable for comment.
