US firm Foley & Lardner intends to become the latest entrant to mainland China and has poached Weil Gotshal & Manges‘ China IP head in preparation for a launch in Shanghai.
The firm is yet to apply for a licence to open the office but intends to do so. Foley hired Catherine Sun, who is qualified in New York, Hong Kong and China, to lead its first foray into China.
Sun will remain stationed in Shanghai while the firm’s application is processed, but will be assigned to the New York office.
She becomes the chair of the firm’s Asia practice and heads a China team of six lawyers.
Sun’s practice focuses on IP litigation, cross-border M&A IP matters, licensing and patent and trademark portfolio management.
