New Kirkland trio closes first Terra Firma fund

Kirkland & Ellis new private equity partners have completed their first deal since joining the firm from SJ Berwin.

Partners Mark Mifsud, Richard Watkins and Justin Dolling advised on the Terra Firma fund (Terra Firma Capital Partners III), which closed last month (30 May) having raised €5.4bn (£3.66bn).

Earlier this year (15 January) The Lawyer reported that Kirkland raided SJ Berwin for its private equity trio in order to ramp up its fund activity. The team started at the firm in March.

Kirkland & Ellis partner Richard Watkins said: “This was extremely significant for Terra Firma because it demonstrates that they are one of the big hitters in the market. The last fund closed at £2.1bn. It has increased dramatically.”

The private equity house is an existing client for Watkins and his team, which has advised on previous funds for the company.

The deal comes after Terra Firma announced its £3.2bn bid for record company EMI in May.
