Field Fisher Waterhouse (FFW) has unseated Lovells as Sport England’s sole legal adviser.
FFW won the tender to advise the non-departmental governing body on all legal issues for the next two years.
Head of sport Patrick Cannon said: “We already act for the Jockey Club and the Rugby Football Union and we now feel in a strong position to challenge the more established names in the sector.”
Lovells landed plum roles when it held the contract, such as advising the governing body on the redevelopment of Wembley Stadium.
The contract covers all commercial, constitutional, HR and property issues as well as litigation. The body has reserved the right to conduct a separate tender for one-off projects.
FFW has also reorganised three teams – public and regulatory, EU and competition and telecoms – to create a regulatory department with eight partners and 18 other lawyers.
Lovells declined to comment.
