Eight voluntary organisations have joined forces to campaign against the Government's recent court fees hike. In a letter to the Lord Chancellor, the group – which includes the County Court Advisers Group, Legal Action Group, the Public Law Project and the Law Centres Federation – called for further changes following a recent high-court ruling that Lord Mackay acted unlawfully in abolishing fee exemption and remission in county courts. The group have called on Lord Mackay to include those receiving other means tested benefits, such as job seekers allowance, family credit and disability working allowance among those automatically exempted from the fees. The letter also complains that those in debt will also be particularly penalised by the new system, which introduced new charges for those applying to set aside judgments.
