The corporate partnership: Superwomen only?

So as it turns out, the new female corporate partners in the Leeds office at Pinsent Masons weren’t celebrating with a bottle of bubbly Monday lunchtime (see earlier post below: March 31st, 17.20). They were locked in client meetings in the final stages of a deal.

It was once feared that women that become mothers would shun the transaction-heavy corporate group due to childcare responsibilities.

But as noted by editor Catrin Griffiths in her leader on Monday, the latest round of female promotions into the practice at firms like Herbert Smith, Ashurst and Wragge & Co are proving that’s not always the case.

Newly-promoted partners Alison Starr and Catherine Hemsworth are two of them, and comprise an all female promotion round at Pinsents.

A mother of two, Starr says she has managed to juggle deals and squeals for much of her career at the firm already, and that it’s a bit like having two jobs.

She relies on her husband for help with the kids, she adds, but can only rely on herself to push through a transaction.

And that’s life in corporate. The practice is no less demanding than ever – maybe women are just that bit more determined to make partner come what may. Which includes, sadly, spending your promotion day at the deal table.
