Barristers from the Middle Temple have written to the Environment Secretary John Gummer and local councils to voice opposition to the proposals to build a bridge on the Embankment.
The planned Millennium Bridge would cross the Thames supported by twin 130-metre towers located on Victoria Embankment between the Middle Temple Garden and Temple underground station.
But unhappy barristers are out to stop the bridge proposal in its infancy. George Bartlett QC, a planning and public law specialist at Two Mitre Court, said the whole idea was out of place and ridiculous.
"The height of the towers would be two thirds the height of the NatWest towers and up to the top of the dome of St Pauls," said Bartlett. "From anywhere in the Temple you would see these things."
The Middle Temple has written to Gummer, who is sympathetic to the bridge plans, and to the City of London and Lambeth Council to voice opposition to the proposals.
It will, however, take no further action until firmer plans are drawn up for the bridge.
"My guess is it is not actually going to get as far as any application of any sort being made," said Bartlett. "I think developers are not interested."
