Jones Day has snatched a spot on the Royal Bank of Scotland’s (RBS) UK legal panel in a rare coup for a US firm.

The firm is believed to have won a place on the panel after an intensive review process that saw the bank’s deputy general counsel Chris Campbell examine its corporate and specialist advisers.

The bulk of RBS’s main corporate panel, for deals worth more than £100m, is understood to have been reappointed. Addleshaw Goddard, Allen & Overy, Ashurst, Berwin Leighton Paisner, Clifford Chance, Denton Wilde Sapte, DLA Piper, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Herbert Smith, Linklaters and Norton Rose all won places in the 2003 review and are also understood to have been successful this time.

CMS Cameron McKenna, Eversheds, SJ Berwin and Taylor Wessing are also among the firms to have pitched successfully for places on at least one of RBS’s panels.

Meanwhile, regional firms including Blake Lapthorn Linnell, Cobbetts and Halliwells have garnered spots on the bank’s specialist panels.

An RBS spokesperson said: “We were delighted with the quality of the tenders. We’ve retained the majority of our existing relationships as well as appointing some new firms.”

The review kicked off in July and was mainly handled in-house in an effort to avoid the lengthy online tender process that took place in 2003.
