Lewis Silkin takes on head of legal from major client TBWA

Lewis Silkin has poached the head of legal of one of its major clients, advertising and marketing agency TBWA.

Crown is moving after only a short career at TBWA, having joined the advertising agency – which also counts Cadbury, Nissan and News International among its clients – in 2000. It is not clear if he will be replaced.
“It is still being discussed. Perhaps the agency will carry on using me as its main adviser,” said Crown.
According to Lewis Silkin head of advertising law Brinsley Dresden, such an arrangement could be beneficial for TBWA.
“This will certainly be a more cost-effective arrangement for TBWA than employing Giles as in-house counsel.
“Advertising agencies that employ outside counsel can often pass outside legal costs on to their clients, which they cannot do when employing an in-house lawyer. However, it is completely up to TBWA to choose how it runs its legal services,” he said.
Crown is a qualified barrister who, prior to joining TBWA, ran his own specialist defamation practice.
He was counsel for Bruce Grobbelaar in his defamation case against The Sun newspaper in 1999. He also acted for Laurence Godfrey in his online libel action against Demon Internet.
Crown is planning to qualify as a solicitor, but cannot be made a partner at Lewis Silkin until he does so.
“I don't see qualifying as a solicitor as a major obstacle. But there have certainly been no fixed discussions about whether I will be made a partner at Lewis Silkin,” said Crown.
TBWA also instructs Taylor Joynson Garrett and Davenport Lyons.
