‘s latest lateral hire has raised a few eyebrows. As first revealed on www.thelawyer.com (28 June), Freshfields announced that insolvency star Nick Segal is flying back to the UK after a three-year stint in the New York office of Davis Polk & Wardwell.
Segal’s family is understood to have struggled to settle in the Big Apple since his 2003 move from Allen & Overy (A&O).
Segal will now join Freshfields’ London office in August after discussions with Davis Polk revealed that it would be impractical for him to participate in its US law insolvency practice from London. The London office does not practise English law or have an insolvency practice group.
All above board, so far. But Segal has notably chosen not to return to his former firm and magic circle rival, where he was previously a partner for 15 years. A sign that A&O’s pension deficit is hitting harder then first thought? Or perhaps that Freshfields is even closer to Davis Polk than we imagined?
