There are few lawyers who can claim to have won an Olympic gold medal, but that’s pretty much what Sara Friend did this summer. In fact, she also played a vital part in winning five silver medals and a bronze.
As the British Olympic Association’s head of legal affairs, Friend did not actually run, jump or, in this case, ride her way to a gold medal, but her advocacy at the Court of Arbitration for Sport helped elevate showjumper Leslie Law to an individual gold, her colleague Pippa Funnell to bronze and the team was moved up to silver.
Together with representatives from France and the US, Friend prepared a stunning brief in less than 48 hours. She then presented the majority of the claim before the court, resulting in the demotion of Germany from the podium and another victory for Team GB. Three cheers!
