Barter, Charles – Hot 100

Travers Smith Braithwaite’s corporate team had an excellent year, and Charles Barter was instrumental in that performance. As head of private equity he has consolidated the firm’s classy reputation in mega-deals for management teams, and celebrated another stellar year after closing one of the sexiest private equity deals of 2004 – the £1.35bn sale of insurance and holiday group Saga.

The novel auction was run on a dual track with a proposed IPO and a listing of Saga shares on the London Stock Exchange, although the IPO route was abandoned in favour of a private sale a week before Saga signed a deal with Charterhouse.

Barter also advised the target on the £135m sale of cleaning products manufacturer Deb Group to Barclays Private Equity, all the while maintaining his image as one of the warmest and most effusive private equity stars in the City.
