Barlow Lyde & Gilbert (BLG) commercial litigation head Clare Canning took the decision to leave the firm a year ago, but was convinced to stay, The Lawyer can reveal.
Canning, who is serving her notice before moving to Mayer Brown, had to come clean to BLG last year after the firm’s management got wind of her possible departure, leading to emergency talks aimed at convincing her to stay.
“The firm tried to persuade her to stay with talk of how great Barlows’ new future will be,” explained a BLG partner. “Clare told them she’d stay at the firm for another year and see if she felt differently once the changes were set in motion. Obviously she didn’t.”
Since Canning made her initial decision to leave, BLG has undergone much restructuring, including the overhaul and expansion of its commercial litigation team. In addition, the firm recruited its first chief executive in Clint Evans to assist BLG’s revival strategy.
Canning was unavailable for comment. A BLG spokesperson declined the opportunity to comment.
