US firm Foley & Lardner intends to become the latest entrant to mainland China, poaching Weil Gotshal & Manges’ China IP head in preparation for a launch in Shanghai.
The firm has applied for licence to open an office but has not yet secured it.
The firm hired Catherine Sun, who is qualified in New York, Hong Kong and China, to lead its first foray into China.
Sun will remain stationed in Shanghai while the firm’s application is processed, but will be assigned to the New York office.
She becomes the chair of the firm’s Asia practice and heads up a China team of six lawyers.
Sun’s practice focuses on IP litigation, cross border M&A IP matters, licensing and patent and trade mark portfolio management.
