The law and lobbying firm has been retained by the government to liaise with the US government over aid and investment. The firm will act on a pro bono basis.
Earlier this month, President George Bush called for an initiative to re-build Afghanistan's infrastructure and economy. If the US and international community provides the necessary funding, Afghanistan could be a hot bed of infrastructure, power and telecoms projects.
The Verner Liipfert team representing the Afghanistan government is led by partners Brenda Meister and Lawrence Levinson, both previous presidential aides to George Bush and Lyndon Johnson respectively. The firm also boasts former Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole, who has played a major role in setting up the firm's links in Afghanistan.
Meister said that the chief objectives were to secure humanitarian aid, reconstruction funds and security assistance for the formation of a democratic government.
