In-house lawyers are finding it difficult to meet the increasing demands for specialist knowledge, according to a recent survey carried out by Eversheds. The survey revealed that in-house lawyers are facing increasing pressure, with 18 per cent feeling a greater range of expertise is required of them. However, 73 per cent of companies questioned had not increased the size of their departments in the past year and 57 per cent had no increase in their budget. The survey also revealed that relations between in-house and external lawyers operate on a more professional basis than in the past. Although 41 per cent still value personal relationships as a basis for appointment, this represents a significant decrease compared with previous working practice.
