TWO of London's leading commercial sets Brick Court chambers and 2 Hare Court are moving into purpose-built accommodation this August, to allow for future expansion.
Brick Court chambers, with 53 tenants, is leaving Devereux Court and its Inner Temple annexes in 1 Brick Court and 11 Essex Street for a recently redeveloped building at 7-8 Little Essex Street. The rent is "slightly more" than the present arrangement.
The 52 tenants at Inner Temple-based 2 Hare Court and its annexes in Fleet Street and Devereux Court are all to be housed at the bottom of Essex Street in Blackstone House, which has been acquired and refurbished by Inner Temple.
Both sets, which will be moving in August, say their moves have been driven by a desire to have all tenants under one roof.
Julia Horner, practice manager at 2 Hare Court, said: "It's easier to indulge in new ideas when everyone's in the same building."
The new premises reflect the trend towards modernisation. Richard Aitkens QC, who is co-ordinating Brick Court's move, said: "We needed somewhere fit for the next century with efficient IT, and somewhere attractive to solicitors."
The moves are likely to spark off more moves in Temple as sets exploit the space available. Ian Moyler, senior clerk at Brick Court, said "a 26-tenant set currently in Temple" was close to taking the lease at Devereux Court.
A spokesman for the estates committee in Inner Temple said there was always interest in new space.
