THE BAR Council has appointed the head of Manchester Metropolitan University's School of Law to oversee its new education and training department.

Nigel Bastin takes on the newly-created role on 1 January and will prepare the Bar for its position as regulator of the Bar Vocational Course.

Under the recently approved validation scheme the Bar takes over from the Council of Legal Education as regulator next academic year.

A Bar spokesman said Bastin was chosen because “we wanted a respected and authoritative figure in the field of legal education”.

Bastin said: “The new department will be responsible for the regulation of the initial stage of training, which is law degrees, the Bar Vocational Course, and also the educational input into pupillage and continuing professional development for young practitioners.”
