Sir Arthur Watts QC of 20 Essex Street died on 16 November. Watts, who was called to the bar in 1957, taking silk in 1988, was legal adviser to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and practised extensively before the International Court of Justice.

The public international law barrister and arbitrator was co-editor of the latest edition of Oppenheim’s International Law.

Iain Milligan QC, head of 20 Essex Street, said Watts would be badly missed.

“He was a friend to many, who held him in the warmest regard,” he said. “As a scholar, practitioner and colleague he was an inspiration to very many more, who saw in him the epitome of elegance of thought and expression.”
