Stamford Law Corporation is launching in Beijing and Guangzhou, following a bulk hire of Chinese specialist lawyers from rival Singapore firm Colin Ng & Partners.
Tan Chong Huat, who leads the team, will join Stamford as a director (the equivalent of a partner) and is bringing with him around six other lawyers. They will all join the firm’s Chinese practice.
Premises for the new offices have already been found and the opening date is imminent. Initially they will be staffed by one or two lawyers. The firm also plans to open in Shanghai.
Stamford’s senior director Lee Suet Fern told The Lawyer: “What we’ve come to realise is that, while in the past we’ve conducted a China practice without an office in China, today it is difficult to have a credible serious practice without a presence there.”
Tan’s clients include a number of international heavyweights such as Sun Microsystems, Toyota, Fuji Film, ESPN and Autodesk. He is also a legal adviser to the State Administration of Foreign Exchange and a qualified arbitrator with the China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission.
