Shaw Pittman exits spark hiring push

The London office of US firm Shaw Pittman has been hit by a stampede of associates following recently departed partners Andrew Moyle and Jennifer Matt-ingly, but the office plans to bounce back with a bold new strategy.

Highly-rated associate Alicia Young has quit to hook up with Mattingly at Pillsbury Winthrop, and The Lawyer understands that four associates will join Moyle at Latham & Watkins.

These losses leave the office with nine associates and four partners. Its two remaining technology partners, Alistair Maughan and David Skinner, will have just two associates who specialise in outsourcing, which is the firm’s key strength.

London managing partner Maughan, who sits on the US firm’s 15-strong board of directors, has hit back with an ambitious new strategy aimed at more than doubling the size of the practice.

Maughan wants to increase the number of partners in London (currently four) to 10 by 2006 and at the same time boost turnover for the London office from an estimated £6.7m for last year to £13.5m.

“We’re reassuring associates how committed we are to London with the promotion of strong associates to partner, reinforced with growth from lateral hires,” said Maughan.
The strategy plan, which was implemented before the departures, reinforces the office’s focus on technology, corporate and HR.

“The plan seeks to communicate a ‘one London’ message with the three different practice areas presenting a united face and working on transactions that combine all three,” said Maughan.
