Freshfields has recruited a second leading US securities partner to join the firm's US securities practice.
Don Guiney, from US firm Hale & Dorr, joined Freshfields last week to further strengthen the firm's capability in its burgeoning US securities practice, which now has 10 US lawyers in London.
Last July, when the group was established, it was hoped that an initial team of “five or six” lawyers would be assembled to work with the firm's UK solicitors.
Stephen Revell, head of the firm's capital markets group, said: “There is no quota on people, it is demand driven. We need to gear up with Don's arrival in London.”
Guiney's appointment follows last year's recruitment of ex-Shearman & Sterling partner Tom Joyce, who was head-hunted specifically to establish a US securities law team at the UK firm.
Guiney leaves London firm Brobeck Hale & Dorr which he set up as a joint venture for US firms Hale & Dorr from Boston, where he was a partner, and California-based Brobeck Phleger & Harrison.
Both firms involved in the joint venture specialise in International Public Offerings (IPOs) which is cited as an additional reason to recruit Guiney by Anthony Salz, senior partner at Freshfields.
He said : “Since Tom Joyce joined us last summer we have been looking for another senior US securities partner. Don's extensive IPO experience and specialist industry knowledge is just what we need.”
