Lord Fraser of Carmyllie QC, Minister of State at the Scottish Office with special responsibility for European affairs, last week represented the UK at a meeting of the Council of Justice and Home Affairs Ministers held in Luxembourg. Lord Fraser spoke on judicial co-operation issues, including a draft convention on extradition which seeks to reduce some of the legal obstacles in the EU.
Society's Europe visit
Thirty solicitors from eastern England will pay their first official visit to the European Institutions and the UK's Permanent Representation this week. The visit, organised by the Law Society's Brussels office and council member Richard Hegarty, will include talks by members of the European Parliament and European Commission officials. The second in a series of visits organised by the office, the trip aims to heighten awareness of European law's scope and the services of the society in Brussels. Cambridgeshire MEP Robert Sturdy says he is glad solicitors from the eastern region are taking the initiative to find out more about the EU.
